Bob Walkup is a graduate of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa receiving his bachelors’ degree in Industrial Engineering in 1960. After two years as an officer in the Army Corp of Engineers, he returned to Iowa and started work as a manufacturing and aerospace engineer. His career includes significant management and executive positions with Collins Radio, Rockwell International, Fairchild Republic, and Hughes Aircraft Co. His specialties are avionics, aircraft design and manufacturing, tactical missile development and deployment; space research, international trade, and government relations.
In 1999, Walkup was elected as a Republican Mayor in the primarily Democratic City of Tucson. He was reelected twice more, serving for a total of 12 years before his retirement in 2012.
Mayor Walkup believes his most significant accomplishments during his tenure are: securing a safe community water supply for the next 100 years, creating a $2 billion regional transportation authority for the Tucson region; organizing the first Region Economic Development Council to create new 21st century jobs for the region; and initiation of the start of the critical revitalization of the center city bringing to the City the first all American built Streetcar and over $1.0 billion of investments during his Mayorship.
Additionally, he served as the Vice Chair of the US Conference of Mayors’ Aviation Subcommittee, President of the Arizona League of Cities and Towns, and Member of the board of the Sun Corridor Regional Economic Development Organization. Walkup met with President G. W. Bush to establish the National Citizen Corp Council as a result of 9/11 terrorist attack on the US, was invited to meet with President Obama, along with 9 other major city mayors, to review President’s 2011, State of the Union speech to be delivered on January 25, 2011, and developed and presented to the Conference of US Mayors on 1/20/2011, the National Mayoral Civility Accord Agreement subsequently signed by 350 Mayors.
In July of 2013, he was selected by the South Korean Government and approved by the United States Department of State to become the Republic of Korea Honorary Consul in the State of Arizona. Mr. Walkup’s primary duties and responsibilities are to exert his best effort to protect overseas Korean nationals who reside in the State of Arizona. Additionally, his duties include acting as the liaison officer for the promotion of trade, economic, cultural, scientific, and education relations.
Bob is married to Beth Walkup, herself a strong community activist. Together they have 5 children and 8 grandchildren.
