I used to live and work in Denver, until I was recruited by one of my former bosses to come and work at TMC Health in Tucson. It honestly felt like Tucson was not too far off from some of our Colorado cities. I really enjoy the outdoors and enjoy being able to go up to the mountains within an hour and be in a totally different environment.

Tucson has a lot of opportunities for healthcare, including major systems that allow for almost anything you want to do in healthcare. The best thing about TMC is that we are local and connected to the community, so we’ve always been able to turn on a dime. They’re also very tech-savvy, with virtual nursing going live this year.

Being able to go hiking in the canyons and various caves and see historical landmarks – I really enjoy that part of Tucson. The diversity in the city is extremely appealing and the cost of living down here has been way better.

We recently moved from Denver to Tucson, and we live next to Pusch Peak, which is just gorgeous. I really do think that the desert is beautiful, especially now that the cacti are starting to bloom. We’ve already taken in a University of Arizona game, and I love the street fairs and festivals and the great food.

When I was looking for a job, Banner – University Medicine really stuck out to me. I believe in the education happening at Banner and how the institution helps to grow and mentor the upcoming providers in the area. I also love that Banner is a designated magnet facility, which was one of the top factors I was looking for in a hospital.

If you want to make a difference, Tucson’s healthcare industry is a great place to jump in. It doesn’t matter what education or experience level; there is a place for you here if you want to make a difference and really be rewarded for helping others.

El Rio Health

I’ve been living in Tucson since 2015 and am originally from Trinidad. When I interviewed at El Rio Health, the mission was just remarkable. Everyone here was focused on getting people better, getting people into care for each service and really taking care of people who are struggling.

Our clinic serves a lot of the LGBTQ community, and we work with the Native American population. There are a lot of services from the federal and state level, so I’m able to provide services to folks that I don’t think I would’ve been able to provide anywhere else in the United States. I also work very closely with my colleagues at TMC and Banner Health, so it always feels collegial – it never feels competitive.

The community is also just so kind and loving. I was able to find my partner here and start a family. To be able to not only find professional but personal fulfillment in Tucson has been great — can’t see myself anywhere else.

I was born in Fresno, California, which had a large immigrant population, and Tucson’s culture mirrored and reminded me a lot of that area, not only in terms of the Latino population but also in terms of the culture, the food and the weather.

After I did my research on El Rio, it became apparent that this was a healthcare organization that is rooted in the community. Coming to El Rio I really began to appreciate the diverse senior leadership team here. We have women executives, executives of color. We have people who have been promoted and developed into leadership positions.

There’s a need and a lot of opportunity out here in the Tucson healthcare industry. I think the whole area is really set up to support the community – especially with the abundance of training available to support new providers of color such as the programs at Pima Community College.

When school was over, my wife and I went to Los Angeles for our subsequent training. She was at USC for law school, and I was at USC for my residency and fellowship. We looked at each other and said, ‘Where do you want to settle?’ We both thought, let’s come back to Tucson.

Both my wife and I enjoy the outdoors, and we’re active people. Tucson was a nationally high contender, but in fact, it was the highest. I just really enjoy the feel of the city – it’s a college town, and at the same time, it does offer a tremendous number of amenities.

At Banner we offer the whole gamut of services, so I feel like every expertise resides within a phone call away. We’ve got exciting research happening all the time. Our surgery department, for example, has been increasing its grant funding for the past number of years and I’ve seen spectacular research coming out of this place by people who are just brilliant.

I came to Tucson in 2007 to attend the University of Arizona. I never intended to stay in the city but then I met someone, and I fell in love with Tucson soon after that.

While Tucson is a big, urban city, it’s like you’re always just one person removed from knowing everyone. I can mention my mother-in-law’s name, who worked in the pediatric emergency department for 30 years, and everyone will be like “You’re her son? I know about you.”

The medical community in Tucson is very small, and the pediatric medical community is even smaller. Everybody knows everybody, and it challenges you to do your best. We are a big city, but you can make your mark as a medical professional in the community.
