OPENING DAY AT NORTHWEST MEDICAL CENTER HOUGHTON – JUNE 3
Tucson, AZ (June 2, 2022) – Northwest Medical Center Houghton, located at 2200 S. Houghton Road, officially opens at 7 a.m. tomorrow, June 3, providing residents of East Tucson convenient access to hospital care should they need it.
NMC Houghton is the latest example of Northwest Healthcare’s commitment to expanding healthcare throughout Pima County. In addition to NMC Houghton, Northwest Medical Center in Sahuarita opened in Nov. 2020, joining Northwest Medical Center in Northwest Tucson as well as Oro Valley Hospital. Each of these facilities is a distinct, important part of the system’s broad commitment to building an integrated healthcare network across our community.
“We’ve served the Vail area since 2015 with our free-standing Emergency Department – and now, we’re enhancing our commitment to Tucson’s East side by offering comprehensive, full-service healthcare at the hospital and the physician offices right next door.” said Brian Sinotte, Market CEO of Northwest Healthcare.
Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, NMC Houghton is a 52-bed hospital, featuring a full-service Emergency Department; an Intensive Care Unit; four operating rooms with robotic-assisted surgical capabilities; and a full offering of women’s services, including labor, delivery, postpartum and neonatal intensive care services to follow shortly after opening.
Providers at Houghton will also offer specialty services such as cardiology (including cardiac catheterization), urology, gastroenterology, orthopedic surgery and joint replacement; general surgery; women’s surgery; physical, occupational and speech therapy; and even sports medicine.
“Our amazing and dedicated team is excited to begin serving the community on the rapidly growing east side of Tucson,” said Denzil Ross, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer.
“I’ve been committed to serving patients on Tucson’s east side for many years,” said Dr. Ty Endean, D.O., an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician who also serves as Chair of our Medical Advisory Committee. “I’m excited that my patients will have access to a hospital with excellent healthcare right here in their neighborhood.”

Northwest Healthcare Announces Expansion in Tucson, Arizona; Adds Nearly 600 Jobs
Tucson, AZ (January 7, 2019) – Today we welcome expanded healthcare delivery and services for Tucson’s eastside and surrounding high-demand areas.
Northwest Healthcare announces a new 70-bed hospital and expanded medical services on 18.5 acres at the southwest corner of Old Spanish Trail and Houghton Road. Pending City of Tucson approval, this new 183,000 square-foot facility and related physician offices/services will add 595 healthcare jobs in a high-growth area of Tucson. The economic impact will be $567 million added to the regional economy over the next five years.
“With the addition of nearly 600 jobs, this expansion of Northwest Healthcare will deepen the healthcare assets on the eastside of our region,” said Joe Snell, president & CEO, Sun Corridor Inc. “Access to quality healthcare is always a top concern of both area employers and site selectors, and we congratulate Northwest on choosing Tucson and southern Arizona once again.”
“There has been increased demand for full service medical care from the growing population on the southeast side of Tucson and unincorporated Pima County. I am glad to see Northwest Hospital making the investment to bring high-paying jobs and expanded medical service to this part of our county,” said Chuck Huckelberry, Pima County Administrator.
“This is a very welcome result of the growth in this part of Tucson,” said City of Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild. “Businesses have expanded; more residents have moved in, and with this growth comes an increased demand for services, including top-quality health care.”
“This project will not only create hundreds of high-quality jobs in southern Arizona, but it will also provide residents with increased access to health services,” said Governor Doug Ducey. “We thank Northwest Healthcare for its continued investment in Arizona.”
“Thanks to employers like Northwest Healthcare, the health services sector continues to contribute strongly to job creation in our state,” said Sandra Watson, president & CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority. “This Tucson project follows an expansion by the company in Sahuarita earlier this year. Northwest Healthcare’s significant growth in southern Arizona is excellent news, for both the region and our statewide economy.”
This announcement is the latest of economic development wins for this region. See further detail below.

NORTHWEST HEALTHCARE PLANNING TO OPEN EASTSIDE HOSPITAL
Tucson, AZ (January 7, 2019) – Northwest Healthcare is planning the development of a 70-bed hospital near Houghton Road and Old Spanish Trail. The announcement is part of Northwest Healthcare’s “No Boundaries” strategy to increase access points to quality healthcare services for Tucson and surrounding communities. The plan is contingent upon approval of the primary jobs incentive by the City of Tucson’s mayor and council, and closing on the land purchase.
The eastside hospital follows an announcement in May 2018 when Northwest shared plans to build an 18-bed neighborhood hospital and medical offices facility in Sahuarita. That hospital will open in early 2020.
Kevin Stockton, Regional President and Market CEO for Northwest Healthcare, said, “We stepped outside of our ‘northwest’ footprint more than eight years ago when we opened an urgent care in Green Valley. Since then, our commitment to deliver quality care at convenient access points throughout Pima County has not wavered. We have long wanted to provide acute care services for residents on the eastside of Tucson. With the success of our freestanding Emergency Room and physician clinics in Vail, this new hospital is a logical and very exciting next step.”
The eastside hospital will offer a broad range of services designed to keep residents close to home. Anticipated services include, but aren’t limited to, an Emergency Room, cardiac cath lab, comprehensive surgical services, labor and delivery including a NICU, outpatient imaging and a medical office building housing primary care, orthopedics, cardiology and OB/GYN. With an anticipated opening date of late 2020 or early 2021, the hospital will have70 beds with space to accommodate future growth and will employ more than 595 people.
Since 2014, Northwest Healthcare has invested nearly $70 million in capital projects to increase access and enhance health services for the Tucson community:
- QuickMed walk-in clinics in Southwest Tucson, Central Tucson and Marana;
- Urgent care at Speedway and Silverbell;
- The county’s first freestanding emergency department (FSED) in Vail and a second FSED location in Marana
